Naval station mayport: sustainable dune restoration
Two Year Project Completed with Vegetation Monitoring and Report Success
Pete Johnson, PWS, Senior Scientist within the NEPA & Natural Resources Group, will be presenting on October 22nd at the SAME Tri-Regional JETS 2025 Conference, hosted by SAME Jacksonville Post in Jacksonville, Florida.
Pete’s presentation entitled Naval Station Mayport: Sustainable Dune Restoration was accepted for presentation during the conference. The summary of this two year project focuses on project purpose and need, sustainable dredge material reuse (65,000 cubic yards), protected species (marine turtle, gopher tortoise, shorebird) monitoring and relocation, sand dune restoration, and vegetation planting and monitoring along the one mile of eroded beach and dunes that were affected by hurricanes Irma and Nichole in previous years.
Over 186,667 Sea Oats (Uniola paniculata) were planted and had a 98% survival rate 90 days post completion. Inclusion of additional species of dune vegetation was also provided to strengthen the resiliency of the dune during a storm and increase plant biodiversity for pollinators and other wildlife.
