What makes the Gopher Tortoise unique? They are the only North American land tortoise found east of the Mississippi River and can live 40-60 years in the wild.
Their natural habitat is in well-drained sandy soils, where they dig burrows with their distinctive shovel-like forelimbs. In their lifespan, they dig burrows averaging 15 feet long and 6 feet deep. Any burrows they abandon become new homes or safe spaces for other species of wildlife that would not survive without them.
