OTIE Reducing Stormwater Overflows
MILWAUKEE, WI / OTIE is the lead designer on a Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District wastewater conveyance construction project in the Milwaukee area. The primary goal of the project is to reduce the risk of overflows in the immediate service area. The North 35th Street and West Roosevelt Drive Improvement project will work toward that goal by eliminating one of MMSD’s most active overflow areas within the last 10 years by installing a new 48-inch diameter Metropolitan Interceptor Sewer (MIS) to redirect wastewater away from a bypass pump station that will be removed as part of this project.
With the mild winter temperatures, construction has been moving along at a steady pace. The Construction Contractor (Super Excavators of Menomonee Falls, WI) is excavating the vertical receiving shaft at the downstream point of connection to an existing 6-inch diameter sewer that is over 90 feet below ground. This is the first of six shafts. The next step is to excavate the launch shaft and bring the microtunneling machine to the site and get to the business of tunneling! A new 48-inch diameter sewer will be installed by microtunneling, horizontally, over a distance of 3,100 linear feet.

Challenges and solutions on this project:
The City of Milwaukee indicated late in the design that they would not be able to complete design work for street lighting and traffic signals modifications required for the project to move forward. OTIE had to quickly assemble two new teaming partners and process a change order to add this scope to the project.
