Monitoring Well Abandonment, Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, IL

SRS is the prime contractor managing multiple, concurrent projects at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge (CONWR). Beginning with World War II, some parts of the Refuge were used for ordnance and other defense manufacturing activities that resulted in soil and groundwater contamination. SRS’s work related to site investigations, remediation, and restoration includes:

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) had identified several monitoring wells that were no longer required for monitoring at a former NPL site and that could be abandoned. SRS located all monitoring wells in the field using GIS maps and identified using geo-positional data. SRS removed and abandoned 136 monitoring wells with depths varying from 20 feet to over 150 feet were removed and abandoned as part of the NPL CERCLA response. The removal included bollards, concrete bases, and well casings, and the wells were abandoned per State of Illinois requirements. Well casings and concrete were transported and disposed at a local landfill, and wells were closed per state monitoring well abandonment requirements. SRS prepared State of Illinois well abandonment notifications for each well and submitted the notifications to the State.
