Biosolids Recycling Facility Vitrification Decommissioning, North Shore Water Reclamation District

The North Shore Water Reclamation District (NSWRD) provides wastewater collection and treatment services for the eastern portion of Lake County in northern Illinois. Due to renovations at the Biosolids Recycling Facility, the sludge melter and its peripheral equipment were slated for demolition and removal.

SRS was on the team that provided engineering services during the decommissioning of the vitrification equipment and appurtenances. SRS performed perimeter air monitoring during the decommissioning activities. SRS established four perimeter monitoring locations and one elevated location inside the facility. Samples were collected over an eight hour time period for RCRA metals on each day of work. Mercury samples were collected and analyzed in accordance with NIOSH method 6009 using a mercurt trap and a low flow Gillian pump. Samples collected and analyzed for the seven other RCRA metals were done in accordance with NIOSH Method 7300.
