USH 51 Expansion and Interchange, Madison – DeForest, Dane County, WI

OES staff member was the Assistant Lead on this $19 million WisDOT construction project. We also provided the Structures Lead, Materials Lead, and two Inspectors. Staff duties included training/mentoring WisDOT staff, materials, oversight and inspection of six bridge structures, three roundabouts, 2.5 miles of mainline grading/pavement construction items and several miles of local roads. This project was a complex 2.5-mile realignment and 4-lane expansion of USH 51 involving multiple construction/traffic stages. Construction was complete in spring 2014.

The project consisted of expanding USH 51 to a divided four-lane highway, constructing six structures and a new full diamond interchange with ramp terminal roundabouts. Additional major items include common excavation and borrow, contaminated soil removal, building removals, base aggregates, concrete and asphalt pavement, culvert pipes, concrete curb and gutter, concrete sidewalk including stamped/colored, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, extensive landscaping and plantings, signing including overhead sign bridges, fencing, lighting, ITS installations, and pavement marking.
